When I was traveling for work in Vancouver a few years ago, I came across a sculpture by Salvador Dalí — one of his famous “melting clocks.”
It stopped me. I thought: “The real reason you can’t find time isn’t lack of planning, but something deeper tied to vision and leadership.”
The sculpture clock was warped, almost draped with exhaustion over its pedestal like it had given up on keeping time. The clock numbers were stretched, distorted. It looked like what time feels like when you’re overwhelmed — constantly slipping, never enough, and completely outside your control.
And I remember thinking:
This is exactly what happens when you’re not anchored to your vision.
Time stops making sense.
Leaders say, “Once Things Settle Down…”
In a recent coaching session, I asked a client when she planned to start that next big thing she was thrilled about.
She whispered,“Once things settle down.”
But let’s be honest, things don’t settle. They refill.
You have another deadline. Another ask, another task. Another late-night scroll, wondering when your priorities will finally rise to the top.
If you’ve ever said:
• “I want to start… I just don’t have time.”
• “I need to wait until this season calms down.”
• “It’s just not the right moment…”
You’re not alone, though you might need some alone time.
But here’s the truth:
Time isn’t your problem. Your relationship to it is.
The Time Trap for High-Achieving Women
You have ambition by the bucketloads.
You’re not bad at planning.
You’re not lazy….
You’re holding too much — and putting your most aligned work last. The aligned, innovative work that makes you an engaged leader.
Here’s how that shows up:
• You block time for others but not for your own vision
• You wait for quiet, but quiet never comes
• You feel guilty putting your priorities ahead of someone else’s
And somewhere along the way, you’ve made having time the requirement to begin.
But that’s backward.
Time doesn’t appear first. Vision does.
